The snowy owl by Irene

Snowy owls live in the Ar tic because there are no trees in the pole. They make their nests on the ground or on rocks. They use abandoned eagles nests.

Snowy owls have yellow eyes and black beaks. They weigh 3 kilos. They have thick plumage and feathers  so they are well adapted to life in the Arctic.
Adult males are white. Females are white with brown marks. Their babies are pure white  when they are born. However, when they get a bit older, their plumage is marked.

Snowy owls lay between 5 and 14 eggs. The eggs are laid singly. The baby birds are born about five weeks later. Both parents defend the nest and their babies.

Although Snowy owls spend the summer in the Arctic, they fly south for the winter to countries like Canada. In fact, the Snowy owl is the official bird of the city of Quebec in Canada.

Snowy owls are carnivores. They eat rodents and birds. They need to eat between seven to twelve mice or other prey every day. Like many other birds, they swallow their prey whole.
